SMA Europe - Membership and Funding of Research Projects

Spinal Muscular Atrophy Support UK is a member and funder of SMA Europe.

SMA Europe was set up in 2006 and is the umbrella coalition of European SMA patient organisations.
Our representative is the Managing Director of SMA Support UK, Doug Henderson. Phone conferences are held on a monthly basis.

SMA Europe strives to combine resources in Europe in order to fund the best research in SMA worldwide. With the help of its Scientific Advisory Board, which includes some of the best international experts on neuromuscular diseases, its annual 'Call for Projects' allocates both operating grants and postdoctoral fellowships in order to develop and grow the SMA research community.

Spinal Muscular Atrophy Support UK has contributed €12,500 towards the SMA Europe 2012 grants round. This has gone towards funding pre-clinical research into gene therapy development to treat SMA. Dr. Martine Barkats was awarded funding for her project entitled, "Optimization of AAV9-SMN gene therapy for SMA". SMA Support UK is excited to be driving forward research that has such potential for the treatment of SMA.

SMA Support UK's donation to the 2011 SMA Europe grants was allocated to an important reseach project being conducted by Professor Matthew Wood at University of Oxford, "Exosome delivery of splice switching oligonucleotides for the treatment of SMA".
