Moving Forward is an interactive and exciting day of free workshops for young people, who have SMA and are aged 13-21 years, to explore information and opportunities that might be useful and of interest to them as they move forward to adulthood. Tea, coffee and a sandwich lunch will be provided by SMA UK.

Date: Wednesday 3rd April 2024, 9am – 4:30pm

Location: MAC Centre, Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham B12 9QH

Bookings for this event have now closed. Recordings and information from the day will be shared after it has taken place on 3rd April.

What topics will be discussed?

A range of topics will be covered, including:

  • Moving to University / college / out of my family home
  • Accessibility and inclusivity in university / engaging in groups / activities.
  • Learning to drive / accessible transport / travel.
  • Independently accessing health/ moving away from others’ support (e.g., parents).
  • Housing / DFG (Disabled Facilities Grant) / living alone / supported housing.
  • Care and Support / CHC (Continuing Health Care) / moving to Adult Social Care
  • Managing my own care / PAs (Personal Assistants)
  • Accessing groups / activities as an adult in the community

These are topics that have been raised by our Teenagers’ WhatsApp Network, which was created for young people who have SMA to share experiences. The group also raised that they wanted to find out more about the support and organisations available to them as they go through the transition process into adulthood.

Who will be running the workshops?

The day is being hosted by SMA UK. Workshops will include people with lived experience, and will offer talks from:

  • Specialist Transition Workers
  • University Disability Workers
  • Other organisations who support young people.

We hope to record the workshops to share on our website at a later date. There will be a group of adults you can talk to, who have SMA and have lived experience. There will also be members of the SMA UK Support & Outreach Team there to talk anything through if you have any questions. Throughout the day, you will have the opportunity to chat to other young people and to explore a range of ideas for your future.

We look forward to seeing you there!
