Just as making a Will brings security to your family’s future, a gift to Spinal Muscular Atrophy UK will secure a future for our vital work, providing services for families and individuals affected by Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).

By making a Will, also known as Leaving a Legacy, you can ensure that the people you love most are taken care of and your wishes are met. A Will also provides you with an opportunity to make a donation to a charity of your choice. If you choose to support SMA UK, your generosity will help us continue our work supporting individuals and families affected by Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

Who can leave a gift in their Will to charity?
Anyone can make a gift to charity in their Will. You don’t need to be wealthy to leave a legacy, which can make a real difference.

You can choose to leave a Residuary legacy (a portion or percentage of your estate) – or a Pecuniary legacy (a gift of a specific amount) or alternatively you can name a specific gift or item, for example jewellery or property.

What do I need to do to leave a gift to SMA UK?
Whether you are writing a Will for the first time or making an addition or change to your Will, the process is very simple. All you need is our Charity Name and Registered Charity Number, which is 5137534. You then need to contact your solicitor who will be able to talk you through the process. If you would like some suggested wording for your Solicitor, please click on the link below.

SMA UK Gift in Will example wording

You’ll need to nominate an executor, which is a family member, friend or professional who will be responsible for carrying out the wishes left in your Will. It is a good idea to make your executor aware that you are leaving a gift to SMA UK and why it means so much to you so that they can help to ensure that the process runs smoothly.

Do I need to let you know that I have left a Gift in my Will?
This is a very personal, and for some a very private decision, therefore there is no need to let us know if you have decided to leave a Legacy. If you would like to inform us then we would love to hear from you and take the opportunity to say thank you. If you change your mind or your circumstances change, then there is no need to keep us informed, we understand that life can be unpredictable.

Can leaving a Gift in my Will reduce Inheritance Tax?
Any gifts left to charity are exempt from Inheritance Tax.  You can also pay Inheritance Tax at a reduced rate of 36% , as opposed to the usual rate of 40%, on some assets if you leave 10% or more of the ‘net value’ to charity in your will.  Find out more about Inheritance Tax.
