Counselling service
Counselling service
We understand that it’s not always easy to access counselling and therefore SMA UK is working in partnership with Rareminds to offer a free, confidential counselling service for those affected by SMA aged 18+.
Our dedicated Rare Minds counsellors provide a safe, confidential relationship to work through difficult thoughts or feelings, and explore new ways of approaching your difficulties.
- Six to twelve sessions can be provided either via Zoom or by telephone. Both evening and daytime appointments are available (weekdays only).
- We can offer single person or couples counselling
You can talk to our counsellors about anything you may be struggling with in living with the emotional affects of SMA. This might include:
- The impact of your diagnosis on your family, social or work relationships
- Anxiety or low mood
- Identity (including feeling different, lonely or isolated)
- Dealing with difficult, unpredictable or increasing symptoms
- Coping with unpleasant tests or treatment
- Making difficult choices
- Worries about the future
SMA UK Counselling Team (Rareminds)
The SMA UK Counselling Team are David Phipps (Lead Counsellor) and Anna Smith. Both are trained and experienced therapists who have undertaken additional training with Rareminds on Counselling for Rare Diseases.
David Phipps, MBACP, EAC (Accred.)
David has many years’ experience working for IAPT, GP surgeries and in hospital/residential psychotherapy services. He has had a long-term interest in supporting those living with physical health conditions to live well, and now works primarily Online with rare or chronic disease patients and family members across Europe.
Anna Smith UKCP (Memb.)
Anna is an Integrative Psychotherapist and a registered member of the UKCP. She has worked predominantly with children and families within schools and private practice supporting them through family issues, developmental difficulties, trauma and living with neurodiversity and other special educational needs. She has a special interest in how the needs of a child impact the family set up and how the needs of a family unit impact a child.
Since launching, we’ve seen an overwhelming demand for this service and the team at Rareminds are working at capacity. Due to such high demand, unfortunately we’re currently unable to accept new referrals.
Rareminds Wellbeing Hub
Rareminds have also recently launched their Wellbeing Hub, a collection of resources aimed at helping those affected by a rare disease to navigate some of the more common emotional challenges they may encounter.
Whether it’s practical advice or emotional support, dealing with a diagnosis or uncertainty about what the future may hold, Rareminds hope that everyone can find help and reassurance.
