The Big Weekend ‘Forty and Forward’ Abstract submission guidelines
Selected abstracts will be invited to produce a poster for exhibition.
Please read the following instructions carefully before submitting your abstract. Abstracts may cover any aspect of SMA relating to research or clinical care. All abstracts must be submitted by the deadline of 1st July 2025, after which a small review committee will assess submissions. Authors will be notified of the outcome by mid-July 2025.
Industry Involvement: If the abstract is submitted on behalf of, by, or in collaboration with a pharmaceutical or related industry company, the submitter must declare this at the time of submission.
Language and Audience
- Abstracts must be written in clear, lay English, suitable for a patient and family audience.
- Avoid using medical jargon or highly technical terms.
Title: The abstract title must:
- Be written in sentence case (e.g., “Title of the abstract”).
- Not exceed 150 characters, including spaces.
Abstract Body: The main text of the abstract must:
- Not exceed 2,000 characters, including spaces.
- This limit does not include the title or author details.
Authors and Contributors
- You may list up to 20 co-authors.
- If more people contributed to the work, include them as a study group in the final author slot. They can be acknowledged in full on the poster, but not in the abstract text.
- For each co-author, you must provide:
- First name
- Last name
- Organisation
- Co-authors with incomplete details will be removed by the Poster Committee.
Formatting Rules: The following are not allowed in the abstract and will be removed:
- References
- Tables, figures, or images
- Subheadings (e.g., "Background", "Methods", etc.)
- Keywords
Poster Presentation Guidelines – The Big Weekend
Poster Format:
- Posters should be A0 size, in portrait orientation (841mm wide x 1189mm high).
- Use an academic style for layout and design, but please present your content in lay language suitable for a non-clinical and non-research audience.
Additional Information:
- You may include QR codes on your poster to link to further information. There are no restrictions on what the QR code links to.
- Please make sure your conflict of interests is clearly displayed on your poster.
Poster Setup:
- If you are attending The Big Weekend, you will be shown where to display your poster when you arrive at the venue.
- If you are not attending in person, you can post your printed poster in advance to:

- Delegates will be encouraged to visit the poster exhibition throughout the weekend, especially during refreshment breaks and lunchtime
