Mark Wilson recently raised over £2,300 for SMA UK by signing up for the Universal White Collar Boxing challenge through Ultra Events. Here he shares his story and his tips for training and fundraising.
“I chose this challenge because I wanted to push myself outside of my comfort zone, and I definitely got that! I already trained regularly in the gym, and had done some boxing before, but the training for the event definitely took this to another level. I really enjoyed it however, and while it was a big commitment to train twice a week – plus do cardio work outside these sessions – I knew it would prepare me well for the event itself. Drills, pad work and sparring were part of every session and it’s inevitable, and actually a good thing to prepare you, that you’ll pick up a couple of bumps and bruises along the way, although returning home with a black eye on two occasions alarmed my kids a bit!
Leading up to the fight itself, about 10 days or so in advance you get to find out who you will be fighting at a ‘Match Up’ night. This was a little nerve wracking, but once I knew I could focus on the fight and train that little harder. The day itself was amazing. I had around 25 people there to support me, and although my fight was second last on the card – so 2-3 hours in – I managed to stay focused while my guests enjoyed the hospitality (and the drinks!)The atmosphere in the venue was fantastic, and when it came to my turn I felt relaxed and ready as I knew I’d trained as hard as I could: the fight went really well and I managed to win in the second round!
I worked really hard to fundraise, and my tip would be to send out reminders to friends, family and work colleagues a month, two weeks and a couple of days before the event; people are busy so they will need a nudge! I’d also suggest keeping people updated on social media so they know your ‘story’. And remember to send an update after the fight too!”
