Being a carer isn’t something I switch on and off.
I’m his mum first. I always will be.
But since Harry’s diagnosis, the roles have become impossible to separate.
Because being his mum means being everything he needs—his comfort, his advocate, his voice… and yes, his carer and nurse too.
Most days start before I’m even fully awake. Thinking, planning, juggling medications, equipment, appointments, school… our life is full, and it’s unpredictable.
Some days I feel like “just mum.”
Most days, I’m both.
Because caring is relentless. It’s advocating when you’re exhausted, carrying a mental load no one else sees, and still showing up every single day.
And if I’m honest, I never wanted to be a nurse. I just wanted to be his mum. But this life doesn’t give you that choice—it quietly hands you roles you never expected.
And sometimes, that balance is hard.
Because you still want to just be mum. To enjoy the simple moments without thinking about what comes next.
But then there are the moments that make it all worth it.
Watching Harry do things that once felt out of reach—like confidently using his water bottle, managing his straw, taking safe, independent sips, and driving his powerchair with confidence. Things that once felt impossible.
Those moments aren’t small.
They’re everything.
Caring has changed me. It’s made me stronger, but also more aware of my limits. This life is hard, and it’s okay to say that.
You can be an incredible mum and still need support. Please ask for it. Accept it. Don’t lose yourself in caring for someone else.
Because you matter too.
And on the hard days, remember why you keep going.
For me, it’s Harry. His smile. His strength. His fight.
And I wouldn’t change him for the world.
Happy Carers Week 🤍
