Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a rare genetic condition that affects muscle strength and movement. Early diagnosis and treatment can make a life-changing difference. Yet for many families the signs can be missed or recognised too late. That is why SMA UK is launching a new awareness campaign, SpotSMA (Spot the Signs, Measure Milestones, Action Treatment).

Phase one of the campaign, developed in partnership with the iHV (Institute of Health Visiting), focuses on empowering healthcare visitors. As trusted professionals who work closely with families in their homes and communities, healthcare visitors are uniquely placed to notice early developmental concerns, build strong relationships, and support families who may face barriers to accessing traditional healthcare services.

Through SpotSMA, we aim to equip healthcare visitors and community practitioners with the knowledge and confidence to recognise early signs of SMA, such as low muscle tone or delayed motor milestones, and take timely action. By bringing awareness directly into homes, this campaign helps bridge gaps in access to diagnosis and disease modifying treatment, supports culturally sensitive communication, and ensures that more children, regardless of background, have the opportunity for earlier diagnosis, faster access to treatment, and improved outcomes.

This campaign is funded by Novartis, Biogen and Roche they had no involvement or influence over the content of the campaign or materials.
