At SMA UK, we are always delighted to see members of the SMA community using their voices and talents to raise awareness of issues that matter.

This documentary was created by journalism student Patrick, who chose to focus their university project on the campaign for SMA newborn screening. Drawing on personal experience and featuring contributions from members of the SMA community, the film explores the impact of SMA, the importance of early diagnosis, and the difference that newborn screening can make to families.

Through powerful personal stories and first-hand perspectives, the documentary shines a light on why so many individuals, families, clinicians and organisations continue to advocate for SMA to be included in newborn screening programmes. We are grateful to everyone who contributed their time and experiences to help bring this important story to life.

About the Documentary

“As a journalism student, I am constantly searching for interesting and poignant stories.

Having been tasked by my university to create a documentary piece, I felt it was the perfect opportunity to cover a story that matters to me.

I have SMA type 1 and I believe the campaign for SMA newborn screening is a topic that is so important to highlight. I thought that by creating a documentary I could play a small part in raising awareness of the campaign.

My story, delivered by my parents, along with the input of all the brilliant interviewees; Jess, Rosie and Giles, brings together a piece of emotive and informative content. I hope this documentary demonstrates just how important it is to screen for SMA and the unwavering benefits it has.”
