The Wave Project is a charity that offers adaptive surfing with a focus on improving mental health.

The Wave Project has dedicated surfing hubs for disabled people who want to try surfing, with all sessions delivered by specially trained surf coaches.

There is no age limit, and with seated boards and adapted equipment, including a ‘changing places’, it’s an inclusive opportunity where you can experience the excitement of surfing and being in the sea.

If you’d like to surf with The Wave Project, please contact The Wave Project on adaptivesurfing@waveproject.co.uk or 01637 820830

Maxwell McKnight took part in a session in 2025 he said:

“Out on the sea, I spent around an hour in the water. I didn’t start to feel cold until the end; the wetsuit kept me warm, and the instructors kept checking in with me. What stood out to me was the attention to detail in taping my sea boots onto my wetsuit, so I did not get cold feet! I loved that they gave me full control over how long I wanted to stay out. At one point, even though I was getting cold, I told them I had two more runs left in me. Riding those waves, especially alongside my sister, was the highlight of the day. Every wave felt like freedom!”  (You can watch Max’s video below)

The wave projectFour year old Oakley took part in a session too. his mum said:

“Oakley is an adventurous and fun loving 4-year-old who absolutely thrives when playing in and around the water. He also has SMA Type 1 but living with the condition certainly doesn’t stop him from participating and trying out various outdoor activities! As Oakley’s parents, for us it’s all about finding the opportunities and experiences and adapting as we go.”

You can surf at one of their hubs  in:

  • Watergate Bay, Cornwall
  • Croyde, North Devon
