Just a few of our wonderful supporters who have been fundraising for SMA UK have shared their stories to help inspire you!

Benidorm or Bust!
In May 2025 a group of Volvo enthusiasts embarked on their annual challenge — Benidorm or Bust. They chose to support SMA UK and raised an amazing £7,865! The challenge was to drive from Cheshire to Benidorm all in the name of Theo who was born with SMA Type 1 last year. To help spread awareness, the team even decked out their Volvo with a beautiful photo of Theo — making every mile matter.

Charity of the Year support from AWA
We were delighted to be chosen by AWA Consulting Engineers as their charity of the year for 2024 and are grateful to have received their support throughout the year raising a total of £1672. We were nominated by employee Karen, who has a grandson with SMA.
They created a weekly Midweek Munchies bake sale in the office and some of the team took part in the Walk the Test Way challenge in September. The funds from the Walk were doubled during our Big Give Christmas Challenge and they completed the year by having lots of fun by holding a Christmas Jumper Day.

Taking SMA UK to new heights!
Rachel Toth, from Dundee, took SMA UK to new heights by completing an ascent of the Himalayan peak Yalung Ri, which stands at incredible 5,630 metres (18,471 feet)
She took a specially made flag to the summit, which was left attached to the Tibetan prayer flags on the mountain, making this the highest point reached by one of our supporters.
Rachel was inspired to support the charity as her close friend Alistair has SMA Type 3 and is a Trustee of SMA UK and she raised £3,000 by completing this amazing challenge.

Family smash target with 3 peaks in 24 hours
Over the August Bank Holiday weekend, Frazer Lloyd and 30 of his friends and family, began their mission to smash their target of completing the UK Three Peaks Challenge in just 24 hours. The group managed to climb Ben Nevis, Scaffell Pike & Snowdon in an incredible 23 hours & 50 minutes and were joined by even more supporters for the final climb.
Not only did they complete this mammoth challenge in an unbelievable time, they also held a fun day on the Sunday – with bouncy castles, face painting and games for the kids, followed by live music from a DJ, a raffle and an auction in the evening!
Their mission was to raise funds and awareness of SMA and they were inspired by Frazer and Leah’s nine-month old son, Frank, who has SMA Type 1. They were able to donate an incredible total of over £5,000 to SMA UK from their fundraising and we are very grateful for their support.

Sharon’s Ultimate Trio Challenge
Sharon completed three trekking challenges during 2023 in memory of her son Christian, who passed away in 2004. The family had already raised an incredible amount through Christian’s Angel Fund over the years and Sharon added over £5,000 to this by completing an ‘Ultimate Trio’ of the Three Peaks, 24 Peaks and the Inca Trail!

Land’s End to John O’Groats Cycle
Ian, Paul & Neil took on the huge challenge to ride from Lands End to John O’Groats. They decided to fundraise for SMA UK because they have a personal link; Ian and Jane lost their son Ben to Type 1 SMA 25 years ago, so they know that any amount donated will make a massive difference. They completed the challenge after a gruelling eleven days and raised an incredible total of over £10,000!

Having a Ball for Sienna
Sienna has SMA Type one her family organised a Ball in May 2023 to raise funds for SMA UK. They raised an amazing £4,000!
Sienna’s Mum Sian says “It will be 1 year since our little girl was diagnosed with SMA type 1. We want the day to be positive each year, not negative and some funds for SMA UK as a thank you for everything they do for families and those with Spinal Muscular Atrophy.”
