We are pleased to announce that Giles Lomax will be taking over from Angela Smith-Morgan as Chief Executive Officer at SMA UK from the 9th May 2023.

We are sorry to be losing Angela, but understand that she now needs to move on for personal reasons and we wish her all the best spending time with her family.

She says: “Being CEO of SMA UK for the past two years has been the greatest honour, and I’m incredibly proud of everything that has been achieved and I am delighted to be handing over the baton to Giles. He has been involved with the SMA Community and the charity since the birth of his twins in 2018 who both have SMA Type 2, and has also been an active fundraiser taking on challenges such as cycling the famous Land’s End to John O’Groats route. Giles brings his experience and skills to lead SMA UK into the future.”

Over the last 12 years, Giles has worked within several National Governing Bodies for Sport and a not-for-profit local authority, whilst also holding a number of board positions across several organisations. He was appointed as an independent director with Scottish Fencing in 2021, is a member of the Scottish Professional Development board for CIMSPA, (The Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity), member of the UK Coaching advisory panel, and also chairs the Judo Scotland Disciplinary panel.

Giles says: “I feel extremely privileged to be leading the organisation as we continue to support people who are living with SMA. As CEO for SMA UK I will drive our mission forwards ensuring we work tirelessly to raise awareness of SMA, be a leading advocate for individuals and families and ensuring timely access to diagnosis, effective treatment and best management for all affected by SMA. I will make sure we listen to and support our community in making informed choices and will bring together skills, knowledge and resources in the UK and beyond, in our quest to optimise the future lives of all affected by SMA.

I bring a deep understanding of the physical and emotional impact on people who are living with SMA and I believe that those personal experiences will add significant value to the organisation.

Over the next few weeks I will work closely with Angela and her brilliant staff team allowing for a seamless handover and look forward to meeting people within the SMA community and working with our valuable partners.”

We hope you will join us in welcoming Giles over the coming months to the team.
