NICE has opened registration for the upcoming Technology Appraisal Committee meeting on intrathecal onasemnogene abeparvovec for treating spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) in people aged 2 years and over [ID6556].
The meeting will take place virtually via Zoom on Tuesday 6 October 2026.
What is the meeting about?
The meeting forms part of NICE’s technology appraisal process for intrathecal onasemnogene abeparvovec, a treatment being assessed for people with spinal muscular atrophy aged 2 years and over.
The committee meeting will consider the evidence and issues relevant to the appraisal. The meeting will be held in public, although confidential information may be discussed during parts of the session.
How can you attend?
Registration to observe the meeting is now open through the NICE website.
Registration closes at 4pm on Tuesday 29 September 2026.
If you register as a public observer, you will be able to listen to the proceedings, except during any sections where confidential information is being discussed.
Public observers cannot:
- Participate in committee discussions
- Ask questions
- Vote
- Put their views directly to committee members

Once you register directly through Zoom, you will automatically be allocated a place. NICE advises that you will not receive a separate confirmation email.
Your Zoom joining link and further instructions will be sent 1–2 days before the meeting.
Why is this important for the SMA community?
NICE technology appraisals can play an important role in determining whether treatments are recommended for use within the NHS.
For people living with SMA, their families and the wider SMA community, the appraisal of intrathecal onasemnogene abeparvovec is therefore an important development to follow. The October committee meeting is one part of the wider appraisal process, and the committee’s discussions will contribute to NICE’s consideration of the treatment.
