Through a three-year grant with the Motability Foundation, SMA UK introduced SMArt Moves in 2023 and over that time has been an overwhelming success. 

SMArt Moves was created to help people living with SMA access wheelchairs, powerchairs and help support adaptations to wheelchairs. The programme has helped support greater independence, choice and quality of life. Over the last three years we have delivered a total of 159 grants across the UK to the SMA Community.   

For many individuals and families, having access to the right equipment can be life changing. SMArt Moves has helped bridge the gap between what is available through statutory services and the equipment people need to live more independently and participate fully in everyday life.  

We would like to thank our Grants Officer, Ally Allen, who was significant in starting the scheme and networking with families, suppliers, and other grant giving organisations, helping and supporting each application from beginning to end. Ally worked alongside (as well as)  health professionals, equipment suppliers, other charities/organisations who helped to make this grant possible.   

Although the programme is now closing, its impact will continue to be felt by the people whose lives have been improved through this grant. It has also demonstrated the importance of collaboration and investment in helping remove barriers for people living with SMA.  

SMA UK will continue to offer Flexi Grants, providing support towards a range of equipment costs for people living with SMA. We are also exploring ways to offer further support for wheelchairs and wheelchair adaptations in the future as we recognise how valuable this is to our community and will share further information as our plans develop.
